I read pretty often about people who think Farkas acts out of character once you marry him. He does start calling you ‘love’ and yes, he cooks for you in the traditional Skyrim hubby fashion. But honestly, I don’t think Farkas would be averse to shows of affection. Farkas might not be good with words, but that means he’ll show his appreciation in a simpler way - through his actions. The others seem to step all over him anyways, so he’s not really the sort of aggressive alpha male type who might scorn the idea of gentleness, either… Kodlak always said Farkas was the kindest, after all. Farkas himself even reassures you and says he does as he’s told when you tell him Kodlak appointed you as the new Harbinger in what I assume was a cautious judgement of his reaction, meaning he doesn’t plan to challenge your authority like some of the others might have done.

I know some people don’t like the idea of him being stupid either, but there’s a difference between him having the kind of knowledge and eloquence of a well-read bookworm and him having a more subtle sort of intuitive instinct. If you saw him fighting the giant alongside the others in front of Whiterun, right from the beginning he tells you he thinks you look strong and wants you to join even if you didn’t make it in time to help them. From just one glance at you, he was able to measure your worth - that’s beyond even what Kodlak was capable of in a way, since it could be argued that Kodlak trusted you mainly because his dream inspired him to. Farkas is certainly not smart in the scholarly sense, but he is smart in a more basic sense - it shows in his people skills. He’s big and gruff and obviously isn’t averse to a bit of a brawl once in a while for a job, but he was always the quickest to show his support and appreciation for you as the newbie Companion right behind Kodlak, and the quickest to defend you. I know many people loved when he transformed into a werewolf and slaughtered those Silver Hand members, and that was certainly a reflection of his powerful instinct - he was cornered, so he used the best means to defend himself and you. That was very animalistic, but more in a protective sense - he’s very much in control of it and in fact NOT as bloodthirsty as some might want him to be as a werewolf man (sorry!) - even Kodlak was surprised that Farkas didn’t have any trouble reigning in his bloodlust at all. I hope no one is offended that I’d use an example from an anime, but take Luffy, from One Piece - he’s constantly depicted as incredibly dense, but even Chopper, the most animalistic of the crew, admits that his instincts for battle and protection are second to none. Not that Farkas is THAT dumb (Luffy is…pretty out there LOL) but still. Farkas may be ferocious in battle, but only towards his enemies. Never to you. He’s always been quick to show affection for the Dovahkiin in his blunt, gentle giant way. Unless you accidentally hit a friendly NPC with an arrow and experience that infamous glitch, but that’s another story entirely eheheh

To me he feels very earthy, not firey, like Vilkas. If anything, I would have thought Vilkas would be the type who would be more against cooking for you and addressing you with lovey-dovey language (though I’m aware he becomes very doting too after marriage, which I’m sure Vilkas fans find adorable and analyze with their own reasonings). Despite the teasing he receives from Aela, Farkas still thinks of it as a lesson about trying to be his best, and that sort of sweet gentleness is rare in such a harsh environment like Skyrim where ferocity in battle and in temperament is more prized culturally by the Nords. He’s not afraid to tell you something (or someone. *cough*Aela) scares him. But it doesn’t make him weak; it’s what gives him a strength, I think, that’s beyond anything the other Companion members have. Farkas is above the petty things like pride that might make other self-proclaimed “manly men” hesitant to admit weakness. That’s why I married him. I’d totally cook for him in return anyway - I leave venison stew in is inventory all the time, harhar. :3 Anyways, I apologize for the length of this post, but I just wanted to share my opinion of Farkas as a character~
